The service was included as a part of the E3 trade show in June 2018 during Microsoft’s press event. The same year in October, Microsoft released an official announcement quoting the codename Project xCloud along with video footage of a game being streamed through the cloud.

The service officially launched in September 2019 as Xbox Cloud gaming available with the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
